TOP SPIN, as expected, captured the S$1m
Emirates Singapore Derby over 2000m at Kranji here today to confirm his
status as the top four-year-old of his year in Singapore.
Trained by Laurie Laxon and ridden by Noel
Callow, TOP SPIN (Arena - Gas by Danehill) was just too classy for his
rivals, winning by three lengths to pay $8 for a win, thus completing the
Derby Trial and Derby double.
Japanese bred EL DORADO finished second
while the Michael Freedman -trained STEDMAN came home third.
Earlier in the year, TOP SPIN reeled off a
hattrick in the Three Rings Trophy, Four-Year-Old Mile and Chairman's
Trophy. Only a narrow defeat (fourth) in the Patrons' Bowl prevented TOP
SPIN from making a clean sweep of the Singapore Four-Year-Old Challenge.
It was the second consecutive Derby win for
Lim's Stable after the success of LIM'S PRESTIGE last year and the second
for Laxon who saddled DREYFUSS to success in 2004.
It was the first Singapore Derby win for
Callow, whose
multiple
Group 1 wins in Australia include the Victoria Derby on BENICIO in 2005.
