The Malaysian team has
taken a massive lead after the running of the first event today in the
annual Apprentice Jockeys Invitational against their Singapore counterparts
at Sungei Besi.
FOR KEEPS (Vitrinite -
Clouding by Sea Swell), whose last win was more than 12 months ago and his
recent form anything but inspiring, sprang a huge surprise to capture the
Class 4 - 1400m sprint with Alex Chew astride.
Following Chew home were
fellow Malaysian apprentices S. Mutaza (2nd), I. Fadzlei (3rd), S. Ruzaini
(4th), K. Yazid (5th) and A. Nawawi (7th), leaving Mark Ewe (6th) to pick up
just two points for the Singapore team.
The Malaysian team
collected 48 points today and it will take a mighty effort for the Singapore
team in the remaining two races to be staged tomorrow to deny the Malaysian
team victory.
Since the series inception
in 2003, honours have been shared by the two teams with three wins apiece.
