Azhar suspended for reckless riding

IPOH,   12 May 2009

Leading jockey Azhar Ismail will serve a 14-day suspension for reckless riding for his handling of SPEEDY CLOUDS in the Class 4 - 1100m sprint over the straight course in Ipoh on May 3.

SPEEDY CLOUDS, ridden by Azhar, won by two and a quarter lengths but the race was marred by the fall of apprentice Calvin Goon from BAJA KING shortly before the winning post and apprentice Alex Chew from DESERT RING just past the winning line.

At the Perak Turf Club today, the Stewards concluded an inquiry into the incident at the concluding stages in the above race. Evidence was taken from Azhar, the rider of SPEEDY CLOUDS, and Goon, the rider of BAJA KING.

Azhar was found guilty of a charge of reckless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(i) in that whilst riding SPEEDY CLOUDS at approximately the 100m mark in this race, he permitted his mount to shift outwards whilst using his whip in his left hand, bumping DASHING SPIRIT (App LL Tai) outwards behind BAJA KING (Goon). He further permitted his mount to shift outwards whilst still using his whip in his left hand and making contact with BAJA KING which was shifting in slightly resulting in BAJA KING losing its footing and falling, dislodging Goon. DESERT RING (App Alex Chew), which was following, fell over BAJA KING, dislodging Chew.

Azhar was suspended from riding in races for a period of fourteen race days with effect from tomorrow and to expire on June 14, both days inclusive. He was advised of his right of appeal.
