Henry Barnabas disqualified one year

KUALA LUMPUR,  13 Jun 2009

Jockey Henry Barnabas was today disqualified one year for his handling of MASTER JIANGMEN in a Class 4 -1700m handicap in Penang on May 10.

MASTER JIANGMEN (Citidancer - Emerald Grey by With Approval), ridden by Barnabas, finished a long fourth to ELECTRIFYING in soft going.

At the Selangor Turf Club today, the Stewards concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of MASTER JIANGMEN in the above race. Evidence was taken from Barnabas, trainer LN Danis and jockey J Shankar.

Barnabas, the rider of MASTER JIANGMEN, was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(8) in that whilst riding MASTER JIANGMEN in the above race, he failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure that MASTER JIANGMEN was given full opportunity of winning or of obtaining the best possible placing.

The particulars of the charge were that:

1. He failed to give his mount sufficient rein from the start and as a result, was placed further back in the field than instructed;
2. He failed to ride with sufficient vigour and determination, and feigned the use of his whip from the top of the straight to the finish, thereby failing to give his mount an opportunity of obtaining the best possible placing; and
3. At approximately the 50m mark, he restrained his mount for no apparent reason resulting in it throwing its head up in the air when it was running on strongly.

After considering the provisions of MRA Rule 44(8)(a), Barnabas was disqualified for a period of one year with immediate effect from today and to expire on June 12, 2010, both days inclusive. He was advised of his right of appeal.

Barnabas subsequently exercised his right of appeal and applied for a stay of sentence. The Stewards considered the application for a stay which was denied. The appeal will be held on a date to be fixed.
