In just his second day on
the job, top Irish jockey Francis Berry has broken through for his maiden
Singapore win on THRILLA IN MANILA in the Class 5 - 1000m sprint on the
polytrack at Kranji here tonight.
THRILLA IN MANILA (Shovhog
- Endama by Whisper Softly) managed just one placing in five previous start
when ridden by five different jockeys.
The switch to Berry paid
dividends for trainer Cliff Brown as THRILLA IN MANILA quickly took command
on settling down, after having broken through the barrier before the start,
to win by one and a half lengths.
Berry managed two placings
from four rides in his debut last Friday, then flew to Hong Kong to ride
DUFF in the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Mile on Sunday. THRILLA IN MANILA was
just one of two rides for him on his return tonight.
Meanwhile, newcomer TUMBULGUM scored a
spectacular win in the Class 4, Div 1 - 1400m handicap.
Ridden by Danny Beasley, the Michael Freedman
trained gelding annihilated the field to win by four and a quarter lengths,
setting a new course record time of 1 min. 4.8 secs., half a second better
than the previous mark held jointly by TUXEDO MOON and DIPLOMATIC STRIKE.
TUMBULGUM (Bianconi - Herries by Alquoz)
finished on board in all his seven starts in Australia, winning once over
1309m at Seymour. His notable other placings were a second over 1300m at
Sandown and a third over 1200m at Caulfield.
