JOLIE'S SHINJU is Cox Plate
bound after completing a clean sweep of the Singapore Four-Year-Old
Challenge with a runaway victory in the S$1m Emirates Singapore Derby over
2000m at Kranji today.
It was effectively a
one-horse race as the Japanese mare was out in front in a flash and led her
male rivals on a merry chase, coasting home by five lengths in a time of
2 min. 0.2 sec, which was just 1.1 second off GLORIA DE CAMPEAO's course
record set in the Singapore Airlines International Cup two months ago.
BIG MAVERICK (O'Reilly -
Ajfan by Woodman), ridden by Brett Prebble, finished second, ahead of MARCO
KID (Keltrice - Tristram Power by Sir Tristram).
"I
hope she can now go for the Cox Plate,” said her owner Dr Tan Kai Chah after
the race. "I think she can measure up in Australia."
Even
before the Derby, Dr Tan had been toying with the idea of running
JOLIE'S SHUNJI
in the Cox Plate. With the Derby victory, the Australian trip is very much
on the card now.
Her victory today came on
the heels of her success in the Patrons' Bowl (1400m) and Derby Trial
(1600m), earning her a bonus of S$100,000 for completing the treble - the
first since BOCELLI in 2001 to achieve the feat.
Trainer Hideyuki Takaoka,
who won last year's Singapore Gold Cup with another Japanese bred EL DORARO,
said JOLIE'S SHINJU is the best horse he has trained. "I
was confident she could run 2000m and she didn’t let me down."
"I
thought she might have gone a little bit too fast at one stage, but when I
saw Ronnie still had plenty underneath him, I knew she would be hard to
catch."
"Cox
Plate? Yes, yes, I think she will go for it", said Takaoka.
