JOLIE'S SHINJU has emerged
as the horse to beat in the Singapore Derby next month and complete a clean
sweep of the Singapore Four Year Old Challenge.
This after the Japanese
mare annihilated the opposition and set a new course record in the Singapore
Group 2 S$300,000 Singapore Derby Trial over 1600m at Kranji here today.
Ridden by Ron Stewart,
JOLIE'S SHINJU (Jolie's Halo - Endearing Quality by Danzig) took command
from the start and never gave her rivals a chance as she coasted home by
five lengths.
Her winning time of 1 min
34.1 secs. is 0.1 second better than the previous best set by KIM ANGEL
which has stood since 2000.
JABAL TARIK (Rock Of
Gibraltar - Marooned Lady by Marooned), purchased for A$800,000 as a
yearling and winner of five races in Australia before coming to Singapore,
gave chase in the home stretch but to no avail. Third was THE HORNET (High
Yield - Millennium Miss by Flying Spur).
JOLIE'S SHINJU, trained by
Hideyuki Takaoka, had won the first leg of the Four Year Old Challenge with
a handsome win in the Singapore Group 1 Patrons' Bowl over 1400m on May 31.
But whether she will
contest the Derby which will be run over 2000m in three weeks' time remain
to be decided. Takaoka said he
not sure whether to press ahead to the Derby and said the decision would be
a difficult one. "It’s a big decision to make. I'll have to sit down with
the owner and have a good talk about it."
Her win today boosted her
record to eight wins and six placings in 18 starts.
