Champion jockey Saimee
Jumaat was in superb form at Kranji today when he landed seven winners
including the S$200,000 Jumbo Jet Trophy from a full book of 12 rides.
WAIKATO (Pins - Skyalker
Wilkes by Skywalker) repeated his success in the Singapore Group 2 1400m
event last year by avenging his narrow defeat to ANY HUMOUR, also over
1400m, last time out.
The pair had the race to
themselves when they finished well clear of the rest of the field but
WAIKATO, who started odds-on, got the upper had this time to win by a head.
It was the fourth success
in the Jumbo Jet Trophy for Saimee after his earlier wins on BON AMIE
(2003), KING AND KING (2007) and WAIKATO last year.
WAIKATO was one of six
winners for trainer Laurie Laxon. Bought for NZ$50,000 as a yearing, WAIKATO
has now earned more than S$1.15m in prizemoney.
The Jumbo Jet Trophy was
presented by retired Perth jockey Johnny Wilson, one of the best jockeys
ever to ride in Malaysia and Singapore.
"I have
ridden
many good horses in Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and Mauritius, but JUMBO
JET is probably the best I’ve ridden and the best I’ve seen," said Wilson,
now 73.
In
1972, Wilson rode "freak horse" JUMBO JET to win the
Tunku Gold
Cup, Singapore Derby and the Perak Derby, in which the New Zealand bred
shouldered a punishing 67kg.
