TRIPLE LUCK, who went down
to CHEYENNE DANCER in the re-scheduled RM1 Astro Wah Lai Toi Sprint Trophy
last December, went one better here today to win the 1400m set-weight event.
Last year's race was the
last time the Sprint Trophy was run at weight-for-age.
With a pull of 3.5kg over
CHEYENNE DANCER in the new race condition this time, TRIPLE LUCK (Akhenaton
- Casual Lies by Huntingdale) took full advantage to win by three quarters
of a length over the Perak Derby winner GOOD NATURE (Way Of Light - Tears We
Cry by French Deputy).
CHEYENNE DANCER (Indian
Danehill - Daylight Hour by Brief Truce), now
trained by Michael Freedman in Singapore after tasting success in this race
last year with Frank Maynard, was a similar distance away third after
hitting the front momentarily at the top of the straight.
The return to form for
TRIPLE LUCK, winner of the MRA Cup (1200m) in Penang and the Coronation Cup
(1600m) last year, coincided with a new partnership struck up with
apprentice Mohd Eirwan bin Khalid who has now ridden him in his last three
starts for two wins and second.
"It's my first cup and the
biggest victory of my career and I am extremely happy," said Eirwan.
For a while though, it
seemed the victory might not have been possible. "He (TRIPLE LUCK) slipped
at the jump and was slow into stride. I had to ride him hard from the 600m
onwards," said Eirwan.
