Apprentice Matthias
Kumar a/l Gunasegaran (G Matthias) was today suspended two months
for his handling of BABY JEWEL in a Class 5 - 1700m handicap here last
Sunday. BABY JEWEL
(Over - Outwit by Canny Lad) came from last at the home turn to finish
seventh to RESCUE BAG.
At the Penang Turf Club today, the Stewards
concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of BABY JEWEL in the
above race. Evidence was taken from Matthias, the rider of BABY JEWEL, in
the presence of his master, trainer MP Thwaites, and trainer R Lines, the
trainer of BABY JEWEL.
Matthias pleaded guilty to a charge under MRA Rule 44(10) for failing to
ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards. The particulars of the charge were
that:
1. From the 800m to the 600m, he failed to make an effort to improve his
mount which would comply with his riding instructions; and
2. From the 550m to the 400m at a vital stage of the race, he further failed
to make sufficient effort to improve his position.
When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into consideration the facts of
this case, Matthias’ points of mitigation and his record. Matthias was
suspended from riding in races for a period of two months with effect from
Monday and to expire on Sep 5, 2009, both days inclusive. He was advised of
his right of appeal.  |
