Big  Maverick returns positive test

SINGAPORE,  4 Nov 2009

BIG MAVERICK is set to be disqualified from the Group 1 Raffles Cup which he won on Oct 18 after his post-race sample returned a positive test.

And the New Zealand gelding would not be permitted to start in the S$1.35m Singapore Gold Cup this Sunday until a sample from BIG MAVERICK has been cleared by the Singapore Turf Club Laboratory.

The Singapore Turf Club reported today that BIG MAVERICK’s sample taken after the winning the Raffles Cup revealed the presence of 3-Hydroxy-N-Methylmorphinan.

Trainer Laurie Laxon was notified of the findings on Monday, and was also informed of the provisions of MRA Rules 137 in regard to his rights and obligations in regard the referee sample. Laxon subsequently exercised his right to have BIG MAVERICK’s referee Sample sent overseas for independent analysis

In addition, Laxon was advised pursuant to MRA Rule 134 (12) which states, “Any horse that fails its pre-race and/or post-race screening test conducted by the MRA Laboratory and/or veterinary examination shall be barred from starting in any race until clearance is given by the Stipendiary Stewards.”

With a rating of 114, BIG MAVERICK is the highest rated horse handicapped at 58kg in the 2200m Gold Cup on Sunday.
