MOORING took advantage of
the absence of sprint sensation ROCKET MAN to snatch victory in the 1st leg
of the Singapore Three-Year-Old Challenge over 1200m at Kranji here today.
Purchased for A$130,000 as
a yearling, MOORING (Bel Esprit - Drop Anchor by At Talaq) was placed twice
in three starts in Australia but has now chalked up four wins in six outings
in Singapore for trainer Michael Freedman.
Ridden by Danny Beasley,
MOORING was tucked just off the pace and was cantering at the home turn
looking for a run. The run came at the top of the straight and MOORING
immediately went after the leader BIONIC BOY to win drawing away although he
drifted out a little in the closing stages.
POWERFUL RULER and WAIPAPA
were coming on strongly at the finish but MOORING had too much in hand.
It was the second Singapore
Group 3 victory for Freedman following the success of ANY HUMOUR in the
Chairman's Trophy last March.
Earlier in the day, another
Freedman runner, JABAL TARIK scorched the track to win the Open Handicap
over 1400m in course record time of 1:21.5 in his second outing in
Singapore.
JABAL TARIK (Rock Of
Gibraltar - Marooned Lady by Marooned), who cost A$800,000 as a yearling,
won five races in Australia and has emerged as a strong contender for the
Singapore Derby next month.
