GOOD NATURE denied KIKO'S
RETURN a double in the RM500,000 Perak Derby when he beat the latter in the
2400m set-weight event here today.
Just seven horses lined up
for the longest race of the Malaysia-Singapore circuit, a far cry from the
hey-day of the Derby when capacity fields were the norm.
Although GOOD NATURE had
won six of his 17 previous races, his only test against the very best was when he
finished fifth to COLOURLAND SUPREME in the Piala Emas Sultan Selangor last
June.
What GOOD NATURE had on his
side, though, was that he is prepared by champion trainer Kevin Coetzee.
Facing six horses trained in Sungei Besi, GOOD NATURE (Way Of Light - Tears
We Cry by French Deputy) did the home crowd proud when he finished three
quarters ahead of KIKO'S RETURN.
GOOD NATURE had a slow start to his career
when he found the mark only in his sixth outing in lowly Class 5 company
early last year. But GOOD NATURE progressed rapidly through the ranks.
Last March, he became the first winner of the
newly introduced Table 1 Race. His win today brought his earnings to just
over RM520,000, a phenomenal return for a horse who cost just A$10,000 as a
yearling.
