Penang races called off after one event

PENANG,  23 Aug 2009

The second day of the Sprint Trophy meeting here today was cut short after just one race has been completed.

Heavy rain over the past week rendered the going 'heavy' for yesterday and today's races. The Penang Turf Club managed to stage the full card of nine races yesterday but after JERAM FIRE (Mellifont - Hatchet Girl by Half Iced) had scored a runaway win in the opening event today, it was abandon the remainder of the races today for safety reasons due to consistent rain and underfoot conditions

Among the affected races today were the Equine Capital Cup and the Tattersalls Trophy, both sponsored event. Both could be re-scheduled to next week, but then again, a big question mark hangs over next weekend's races as well.

Thundershowers is forecasted throughout the next seven days and the track is likely to take more severe beating.

The second weekend of the corresponding meeting for the past two years had been called off due to adverse track conditions.

Two RM1m races are scheduled to be run next Sunday: Astro Wah Lai Toi Sprint Trophy (1400m) and Malaysia 2009 Magic Millions Classic (1200m).
