Apprentice Liew disqualified 12 months

Apprentice Liew Seng Cheong was disqualified 12 months for his handling of CRAYHEYZI in the Maiden - 1200m sprint here today.

The Stewards immediately opened an inquiry after the entire came from last to finish sixth to GOLDEN FIRE HEART.

After taking evidence from trainer Wong Kong Fatt and and reviewing the films, Liew, in the presence of his master, trainer P Lee, was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(8) in that whilst riding CRAYHEYZI in this race, he failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure that CRAYHEYZI was given full opportunity of winning or of obtaining the best possible placing.

The particulars of the charge were that:

1. Shortly after the start, he failed to take up a position behind IRON MAN when there was an opportunity to do so which would be in accordance with his instructions;

2. At about the 900m, he took hold of his mount and switched out over the heels of AMAKA and DAGGERS POINT to a position outside of the field, placing his horse at a disadvantage;

3. After entering the home straight wide, he rode his horse inwards to a gap between IRON MAN and CASH MAN at about the 300m, and having secured that run, sat quietly for a number of strides when there was an opportunity to improve; and

4. At approximately the 200m, when in clear running, he sat quietly for about 9 strides and then switched outwards behind KIM ELLY and IRON MAN, placing his horse at a disadvantage at a crucial part of the race.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into consideration the facts of this case, Liew’s record and points of mitigation. After considering the provisions of MRA Rule 44(8)(a), Liew was disqualified for a period of one year with immediate effect from today and to expire on Jan 9, 2010, both days inclusive. In addition, he was fined the sum of RM20,000. He was advised of his right of appeal.
