A Happy Victory it is not for punters

HAPPY VICTORY (H Samsir) being led in by owner Beh Chin Pheng.

There was little joy for punters in the RM1m Silver Jubilee Sultan Perak Trophy, staged to commemorate Sultan Azlan Shah's 25th year on the Perak throne, here today.

HAPPY VICTORY, who has not won beyond 1400m previously, was the least backed in the field of 14 runners. But he surprised everyone when he made all the running to win the one-off 1600m contest.

Winner of the Tunku Gold Cup in early February, HAPPY VICTORY (King's Best - Bylaw by Lear Fan) relished the soft going and although SHANTOU MAYOR, winner of the Selangor Gold Cup (1600m) last year, gave chase in the closing stages, he held on to win half-a-length.

The top-weight and favourite KIKO'S RETURN, winner of the Selangor Gold Cup last month, came from last early to finish third.

It was the sixth win in 19 starts for HAPPY VICTORY, who cost just A$21,000 as a yearling. The win today took his earning close to RM1.3m.
