KUALA LUMPUR,  Jun 16, 2010

Two trainers have their fine reduced on appeal by the Selangor Turf Club racing stewards today.

Tan Soo Beng was fined RM25,000 after AISA STAR returning a positive swab after its race at Sungei Besi on Oct 4 last year.

Tan subsequently appealed against the severity of the fine.

After considering submissions from Tan and the chief stipendiary steward, the racing stewards allowed the appeal, the fine was reduced to RM15,000 and his deposit was refunded.

Stephen Cook was fined RM15,000 after UNCLETWO’s urine sample returned positive to “3-Hydroxy-N-Methylmorphinan”, a prohibited substance under MRA Rules, after finishing second in a Class 5 - 1700m handicap at Sungei Besi on Sep 6 last year.

On Dec 6, Cook pleaded guilty to a charge under MRA Rule 134(6)(a) as read with MRA Rule 134(13) in that he accepted to run UNCLETWO which ran second in the above race and its post-race urine sample subsequently returned positive to “3-Hydroxy-N-Methylmorphinan”, a prohibited substance under MRA Rules.

On Jan 1, Cook was fined a sum of RM15,000 [under MRA Rule 134(6)(a) as read with MRA Rule 134(13)] and was advised of his right of appeal. In deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into consideration his mitigating factors, the nature of the drug and his previous record.

Cook subsequently exercised his right of appeal against the severity of the sentence which was also heard today.

After considering submissions from Cook and the chief stipendiary steward, the racing stewards allowed the appeal, the fine was reduced to RM3,000 and his deposit was refunded.
