Leading owner Beh Chin
Pheng, who boosted his string of horses with several expensive imports in
the past year, reaped his reward when SPEED BABY (Fastnet Rock - Twisted
Heart by Distorted Humor) captured the RM700,000 Coronation Cup over 1600m
here today.
Beh paid A$280,000 for the
Australian gelding at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale in 2008 and
the four-year-old rapidly rose through the ranks with six wins and two
seconds in as many starts.
It was the first big test
for SPEED BABY, trained by Kevin Coetzee, and he never gave his rivals a
chance in the soft going, winning by 7 3/4 lengths, giving jockey Jacky Lim
an armchair ride.
Second was TRIPLE LUCK, who
won this race in 2008, followed by another up-and-coming galloper EAGLE.
Meanwhile, seasoned
campaigner WORTH THE WAIT produced his best form to win the RM250,000 Astro
Wah Lai Toi Charity Cup over 2000m.
The New Zealand gelding won
five ordinary races in Singapore but never rose to any great heights.
Shipped to Malaysia last
year under trainer Johnny Lim, he picked a further three wins before beating
a small field in the Charity Cup today.
