BETTER THAN EVER completed
a clean sweep of the Singapore 3YO Challenge when he easily captured the
Singapore Guineas, elevated to Singapore Group 1 status this year with
increased prizemoney of S$500,000, at Kranji here tonight.
In so doing BETTER THAN
EVER (French Deputy - Songfest by Unbridled's Song) also stretched his
unbeaten career record to nine and set a record of sort for Singapore
racing.
Having won the Singapore
3YO Sprint (1200m) and the Singapore 3YO Classic (1400m), the latter by
seven lengths, in the earlier legs, the Laurie Laxon-trained gelding was the
only horse the punters had their money on tonight.
So much so that the next
best backed horses, ZAC MISSILE, started at $1396 on the win tote. Never
before have we seen a horse race with such lobsided betting.
In the end, BETTER THAN
EVER gave jockey Saimee Jumaat an armchair ride, leading from start to
finish to win by 4 1/4 lengths in his first test over the distance which he
covered in a time of 1:34.23, just 0.9 sec. outside JOLIE'S SHINJU's course
record.
With a bonus of S$150,000
for winning all three legs of the 3YO Challenge, BETTER THAN EVER brought
his earnings to pass the S$1m mark.
Saimee said he has no doubt
BETTER THAN EVER will stay 2000m, and jubilant owner Jupiter Stable hopes
that this time next year, their gelding will be vying for honour in the
Singapore Airlines International Cup.
