Champion-elect Steven
Burridge capped a superb season when he saddled RISKY BUSINESS to victory in
the S$1.35mil Longines Singapore Gold Cup, the biggest in the local racing
calendar, at Kranji here today.
Completing the cast was
Melbourne Cup winning jockey Glen Boss who answered Burridge's call to fly
in specially to ride in the 2200m handicap.
While Burridge and Boss
celebrated, the majority of racegoers went home disappointed after local
hero and favourite BETTER THAN EVER finished 12th of the 15 runners.
A punishing impost of 60kg
in the rain-affected track, plus a question mark over the 2200m journey, was
the undoing of the four-year-old who had been unbeaten in 12 outings coming
to the Gold Cup.
"This
is just the icing on the cake for what has been a great season," Burridge
said of the Gold Cup win. With a 24-win lead in the table, he is set to end
Laurie Laxon's six-year grip on the trainer's premiership.
"It
is also exciting to win a feature race when you travel to ride in big
races," said Boss who rode the mighty mare MAKYBE DIVA to three Melbourne
Cup wins from 2003-2005.
TELL A TALE, who won six
races in New Zealand including the Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas, ran a
splendid second in just his third start at Kranji.
