Trainer Steven Burridge,
who wrapped up the Singapore trainer's premiership last week with 90 wins,
put icing on the cake when RISKY BUSINESS captured the RM750,000 Yang Di
Pertua Negeri Gold Cup over 2200m at Sungei Besi here today.
While other Kranji based
trainers are taking a break, Burridge worked through the holidays to get his
charge ready for the Gold Cup which was being held outside of Penang for the
first time due to the repairs on the main track at Batu Gantong.
Burridge was richly
rewarded when RISKY BUSINESS (Danehill Dancer - Sky Watch by Star Watch),
ridden by superbly-judged race by Noel Callow, romped home by two and a half
lengths ahead of PROFESSIONAL MAN and rewrote the course record with a time
of 2min 16.2secs.
RISKY BUSINESS first
crossed the border last June when he finished third in the Piala Emas Sultan
Selangor (2000m) on the same track. On his return, the six-year-old has gone
on to win the Singapore Gold Cup and thus become the first horse since
VILLAGE KID in 1992 to both the Singapore and Penang showpieces.
The Sungei Besi track is no
stranger to Burridge, having worked under several trainers at the track
before he went down south and finally got his badge at Kranji.
In 2008, Burridge made a
triumphant return to the track when he saddled TRIGGER EXPRESSa to win the
Piala Emas Sutan Selangor.
