Brazilian Cunha back for six-month stint

SINGAPORE:  Aug 25, 2010

Brazilian rider Nelito Lola Da Cunha, who was in Singapore last month to ride SUPER GOLD in the Emirates Singapore Derby, will be back for a longer stay at Kranji.

After a good start, SUPER GOLD faded badly to beat one home in the 16-strong Derby won by RACE AHEAD.

Cunha, 38, has been granted a six-month jockey’s licence by the Singapore Turf Club to ride from Sep 1 to Feb 28.

A 20-year veteran of the saddle, Cunha is licensed by the Jockey Club de Sao Paulo and to date has ridden over 2,500 winners.

Included in his victories are 22 at Group 1 level and he holds the distinction of riding the most winners in one of his hometown’s most prestigious races, the Grande Premio Sao Paulo, winning the 2400m race four times (1992, 1993, 1995 and 2004).

Cunha was also champion jockey in 1996/97, 1997/98 and again in 2003/04. He goes to scale at 53.5 kg.
