LIZARD'S DESIRE exacted his
loss by the narrowest of margins to GLORIA DE CAMPEAO in the Dubai World Cup
two months ago by defeating the latter in the S$3m Singapore Airlines
International Cup over 2000m at Kranji here tonight.
After Dubai, the South
African runner, trained by Mike de Kock, went to Hong Kong and was beaten a
neck by VIVA PATACA in the Audemars Piquet QE II Cup last month.
So the victory tonight was
especially sweet for jockey Kevin Shea, who thought he had won in Dubai and punched the
air prematurely, and de Kock who had four previous attempts to win in
Singapore.
Singapore's JOLIE'S SHINJU
set a cracking pace, chased by GLORIA DE CAMPEAO. They opened up a big lead
from the others at the halfway stage. JOLIE'S SHINJU bowed out at the 300m.
GLORIA DE CAMPEAO quickly went to the front and had a clear lead 200m out.
Chasing him was a line of
horses, WAIKATO, AL SHEMALI and LIZARD'S DESIRE who was switched to the
outside of horses for his run. LIZARD'S DESIRE collared GLORIA DE CAMPEAO
100m out to win by half-a-length.
AL SHEMALI, hampered by
LIZARD'S DESIRE who was hanging in in the final 200m, finished a gallant
third. Shea copped a three-day suspension for careless riding.
