Promising Hazza off the mark in Singapore

HAZZA, who  came to Singapore with a record of two wins in three starts in New Zealand, got off the mark at Kranji with an impressive come-from-behind win tonight.

The four-year-old was allowed to settle last in the eight-horse field by leading jockey Joao Moreira in the Kranji Stakes C - 1800m event. But HAZZA (King Of Kings - Starmandy by Spectacular Love) took on wings in the final stretch to score by a length.

HAZZA, whose two wins in New Zealand were over 1300m and 1400m, will no doubt be able to stay the 2000m of the Singapore Derby next month. "It’s just a matter of him measuring up," said trainer Laurie Laxon.

Laxon's main hope in the Derby is last week's Patrons' Bowl winner INTERCEPT, ridden then by Moreira. But HAZZA looks a good second string should his connections decide to enter him as well.
