Gutsy win by Intercept in Patrons' Bowl

After finishing second in the Stewards' Cup (1400m) — the first leg of the Singapore four-year-old 'triple crown' — INTERCEPT put himself right in the picture for the S$1.15 mil Emirates Singapore Derby in three weeks' time with a fighting win in the S$500,000 Patrons' Bowl over 1600m at Kranji here today.

Well beaten by GHOZI in the Stewards' Cup last time out, INTERCEPT (Zerpour - Haughty Miss by Heroicity) defeated NEW ROSE WOOD by a neck with the favourite GHOZI a similar distance away third.

But the margin could have been bigger. Ridden by Joao Moreira, the Laurie Laxon-trained gelding was held up for a run behind the leaders POWERFUL RULER and SUPER GOLD from the home turn till the 250m mark.

Moreira eventually eased his mount out for a run, just as NEW ROSE WOOD and GHOZI were making their bids on his outside. But INTERCEPT prevailed in a photo finish.

"There are plenty of upsides from that run and if he pulls up okay, the Derby should be right on target," said Laxon after the race.

Moreira booted home three winners today to bring his tally to 55 for the season. INTERCEPT is the Brazilan's first Group 1 win in Singapore but the fourth Patrons' Bowl success for Laxon.
