THUNDERING JET, who
campaigned with considerable success at the highest level in South Africa,
has been quick to transfer that form to Singapore.
After an encouraging
first-up fifth to WAIKATO in the Group 3 Saas Fee Stakes (1400m) three weeks
ago, the South African gelding stepped it up to win the S$300,000 Chairman's
Trophy over 1800m at Kranji here tonight.
Ridden by Barend Vorster
and now trained by Patrick Shaw, the five-year-old came with a sustained
effort in the last 200m to win by half-a-length after being held up for a
run at the top of the straight.
Last year's winner ANY
HUMOUR looked set to complete a double in the Group 2 event when he dashed
clear in the straight. But THUNDERING JET (Jet Master - Bar The Shouting by
Hobnob) nailed him in the closing stages.
Purchased for 225,000 rand
as a yearling, THUNDERING JET raced 28 times in South Africa for four wins,
including the Group 3 Matchem Stakes (1400m), and seven placings, four of
them in Group races. He was also fourth in the Group 1 Durbam July, one of
the top races in South Africa.
