MAURICE UTRILLO, a debut
winner in Singapore last May 28, returned to the winner's circle after three
starts in the Carlsberg Gold Championship (Benchmark 71) over 1900m on the
polytrack at Kranji here today, leading home a 1-2 finish for trainer
Patrick Shaw.
With nominated jockey
Barend Vorster sidelined due to a bout of kidney stones, fellow South
African Sean Cormack took the ride on the Irish gelding who came to
Singapore with a record of one win, two placings and two fourths in five
starts at two and three in Ireland.
Cormack tucked MAURICE
UTRILLO (Sadler's Wells - Sabria by Miswaki) behind the pace and in the run
home cleared away from stablemate FRENCH IRISH to win by one length.
MAURICE UTRILLO, a
half-brother to LANDSEER whose four wins included the Group 1 Gainsborough
Poule de d'Essai des Poulains at Longchamp and the Grade 1 Shadwell
Keeneland Turf Mile Classic, was sold for 420,000 guineas as a foal in 2006.
QUEEN'S AVENUE (Hurricane
Sky - Madiera by Grosvenor), whose last and fourth win came only five starts
back last April, caused a big upset in the Class 4 - 1100m sprint, returning
S$330 for a win.
