It was always a matter of
time that Joao Moreira would equal and better Noel Callow's riding record of
106 winners in a season here at Kranji, given his phenomenal strike rate in
the first half of the season.
However, it has taken him
longer than expected after going through a lull period of late.
"I
told myself I should re-focus and relax, and go out there and ride each race
one at a time and not think too much about the record," said Moreira who
booted home a double today to bring his season's tally to 106.
DUBAI GOLD (Dubai
Destination - Gold Fame by Made Of Gold), who registered back-to-back wins
early in the season, bounced back with a narrow victory to give Moreira his
105th win.
The Brazilian quickly
followed up in the next race on maiden winner ANAK PIASAU (Kempinsky - Lady
Dance by Baryshnikov).
"This
is something I’ve been aiming for a while now, but the competition here is
so strong, that you really have to work very hard to get it," said a
delighted and relieved Moreira.
It is
quite likely that he will go on and establish a record that will stand the
test of time, given the riding ranks in Singapore is getting stronger each
year.
Moreira's double today overshadowed John Powell's four-winner feat. The
Australian rode two winners each for trainers Don Baertschiger and Cliff
Brown.
