POWERFUL RULER, who ran his
worst race in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup last start, bounced back quickly to
snatch a narrow victory in the Class 1 - 1400m handicap at Kranji here
today.
Partnered by Saimee Jumaat,
the New Zealand gelding ranged alongside the early leader GOLDEN NUMBER on
settling down and these two matched stride for stride till the finish with
POWERFUL RULER (formerly TYCOON RULER) winning by a neck.
Since his debut in
mid-2008, POWERFUL RULER (Viking Ruler - Capsimation by Kaapstad) has
finished out of the money only twice in 20 stats, winning eight times. He
will be among the favourites in the Patrons' Bowl and the Singapore Derby in
the coming two months.
Meanwhile, newcomer MAURICE
UTRILLO (Sadler's Wells - Sabria by Miswaki) also loomed as a bright Derby
prospect with a first-up victory in the Novice - 1400m sprint.
MAURICE UTRILLO was sold
for 420,000 guineas as a foal but was disappointing on the track given his
high price tag, although he won once at Gowran Park and had two placings in
five starts in two seasons in Ireland.
Another newcomer to win
today was MAYBE YES MAYBE NO (Choisir - Sense Of Rhythm by Rhythm).
