Jockey Sandana disqualified one year

IPOH,  11 Jan 2010

Jockey Sandana Kumar s/o Sreetharan (S Sandana) was today disqualified one year for his handling of ASIAN CLASSIC in a Band 48 -58 race here two days ago.

ASIAN CLASSIC (Kenfair - Efflorence by Grosvenor), trained Jerome Tan, came from the rear bunch to finish third to SOVEREIGN ACE.

At the conclusion of an inquiry today, after taking evidence from Tan and Sandana, and reviewing the films, Sandana was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(8) in that whilst riding ASIAN CLASSIC in the above race, he failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure that ASIAN CLASSIC was given full opportunity of winning or of obtaining the best possible placing.

The particulars of the charge were that:

1. From the 1100m to the 800m, he failed to allow his mount to improve into a position between SUMMER SURPRISE and BIG STEEL when there was an opportunity to do so resulting in his mount being placed towards the rear of the field;
2. Turning into the home straight at about the 400m, he unnecessarily restrained and turned his horse’s head out onto the heels of BIG STEEL when there was at all material time a clear run on his inside; and
3. From the 300m to the finish, he failed to ride his mount out with sufficient vigour and determination whilst his mount was running on strongly.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into consideration the facts of this case, Sandana’s record and points of mitigation. After considering the provisions of MRA Rule 44(8)(a), Sandana was disqualified for a period of one year with immediate effect from today and to expire on Jan 10, 2011, both days inclusive. He was advised of his right of appeal.
