Shahrul suspended 12 months on appeal

Jockey Shahrul Nizam, who was disqualified 18 months for his handling of SIR ED last month, had his sentence reduced to a 12-month suspension on appeal.

SIR ED, ridden by Shahrul, was beaten a neck by SUCCESS FOREVER in a Class 5 - 1100m sprint over the straight course in Ipoh on Nov 13.

Shahrul was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(8) and disqualified 18 months.

The Perak Turf Club racing stewards heard the appeal today.

After considering submissions from Shahrul who was assisted by an interpreter, his counsel and the chief stipendiary steward, the Racing Stewards, after considering the evidence, amended the charge to MRA Rule 44(10) for failing to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards.

Acting under the provisions of MRA Rule 12(2)(z), the Racing Stewards suspended Shahrul from riding in races for a period of 12 months, backdated to Nov 14 and to expire on Nov 13 next year, both days inclusive. In addition, Shahrul was also fined a sum of RM20,000 and his deposit was refunded.
