Former champion Singapore
galloper TOP SPIN has resurrected his career in Malaysia by winning the RM1
million Piala Emas Sultan Selangor over 2000m at Sungei Besi here today.
TOP SPIN (Arena - Gas by
Strategic) had two magnificent seasons at Kranji when he chalked up 14 wins,
including the Singapore Derby, the Derby Trial, Kranji Mile, Chairman's
Trophy, 4YO Mile and Three Rings Trophy in 2008 and was named Singapore's
Horse of the Year in 2008.
However, the New Zealand
gelding was never the same since winning the Kranji Mile in October 2008,
managing just two placings in the months following that victory. He was then
shipped over the causeway to join trainer Johnny Lim and today's run was his
fourth under his new trainer.
TOP SPIN gave a glimpse of
his old form when he finished third to GENEROUS TYCOON in the Perak Derby
(2400m) two months ago. With his jockey then, Noel Callow, electing to ride
the top weight FIGHTER JET today, Brazilian jockey Jose De Souza took the
ride on TOP SPIN and made full use of the opportunity.
TOP SPIN gained sweet
revenge over his Derby victor GENEROUS TYCOON, beating the latter by 1 1/4
lengths. Singapore raider RISKY BUSINESS finished third, ahead of another
former Singapore galloper LIM'S PRESTIGE.
