Jockey Yan Weng Kuan, who
last May notched up his 150th career wn on MY DARLIN ANGEL, was today handed
a one-year disqualification for his handling of SAYA JANTAN in the NSF
Premier Stakes over 1200m here last Saturday.
SAYAN JANTAN (Magic Of Money - Kuala Lady by
Centaine) came from well off the pace to finish second to CLASSIC HERO,
beaten just one length.
The stewards initially convened an inquiry into the running and handling of
SAYA JANTAN yesterday. After taking initial evidence from Yan, who rode SAYA
JANTAN, and trainer Osman Sidek, the stewards adjourned the inquiry in order
to obtain the services of a qualified interpreter as requested byYan.
The Stewards concluded the inquiry at the Selangor Turf Club today. Evidence
was taken from Yan, and Osman. Certified court interpreter, Ms Keng Siew
Hong, assisted in this inquiry.
Yan was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(8) in that whilst riding
SAYA JANTAN in the above race, he failed to take all reasonable and
permissible measures to ensure that SAYA JANTAN was given full opportunity
of winning or of obtaining the best possible placing.
The particulars of the charge were that:
1. He failed to give sufficient rein to his
mount at the start resulting in it throwing its head up on 2 occasions,
losing considerable ground;
2. Passing the 400m mark till approximately
the 200m mark, he failed to commit himself to a run on the inside of BOLT
when there was an opportunity to do so and instead, unnecessarily angled his
mount outwards approaching the 200m to race behind BOLT; and
3. From passing the 200m to the finish, he
failed to ride SAYA JANTAN with sufficient vigour and determination when his
mount was running on strongly.
When deciding on penalty, the stewards took into consideration the facts of
this case, Yan’s record and points of mitigation. After considering the
provisions of MRA Rule 44(8)(a), Yan was disqualified for a period of one
year with immediate effect from today and to expire on Aug 8, 2011, both
days inclusive. In addition, he was also fined the sum of RM50,000. He was
advised of his right of appeal.
(Yan’s application for a stay of execution on Aug 12 was rejected by the
stewards. However, the racing stewards later allowed his appeal for a stay
of execution.) |
