After finding one to beat
twice in two starts, GOLDEN BEARCAT made no mistake in his third outing when
he scored a runaway win in the Restricted Maiden - 1200m sprint here today,
the second day of the Penang Turf Club January meeting.
Ridden again by Tai Lee
Leong, GOLDEN BEARCAT (Bearcat - Pretty Pia by Tribu) was in his usual
front-running role but this time there was no catching him, coasting home by
2
1/4-lengths in a smart time of 1min 10.2secs. The three-year-old had
cost just A$16,000 as a yearling.
Martin Wepner, champion
jockey in 2006 and trying to make his mark again in the local circuit this
season, made full use of a chance ride to score on STAR RULER (Viking Ruler
- Stylish Malt by Stylish Century) in a Class 4 - 1600m handicap.
It was the former Singapore
galloper's second win in Malaysia after chalking up four wins at Kranji.
With the win, Wepner is
just two wins behind the leader Azhar Ismail in the jockey's table.
