Former Malaysian Horse
of the Year CAPTAIN OBVIOUS came good in his second start in Singapore
when he led all the way to capture the S$200,000 Jumbo Jet Trophy over 1400m
at Kranji here today.
Making amends after his
first-up unplaced run last month when he obviously needed the run after a
six-month break, the Australian gelding had just enough to spare (a head)
from another former Malaysian galloper SPEED BABY, giving trainer Steven
Burridge the quinella in the Singapore Group 3 event.
CAPTAIN OBVIOUS (Verglas -
Shathor by Tirol), winner of 10 of 15 starts in Malaysia before moving down
south, took advantage of his inside barrier in the weight-for-age event to
make an early break and again kicked clear at the top of the straight which
proved decisive.
"The winning post came too
soon for us", said jockey Saifudin Ismail on SPEED BABY, who triumphed in
the Coronation Cup (1600m) last November — the only occasion CAPTAIN OBVIOUS
failed to finish in the money in Malaysia.
Winning jockey Benny
Woodworth has now ridden CAPTAIN OBVIOUS, previously trained by Chong Keng
Leong, in all but one of his 11 victories.
