Captain Obvious takes Tunku Gold Cup

KUALA LUMPUR:  Feb 13, 2011

CAPTAIN OBVIOUS showed his class once again when he scored a record-breaking win in the RM300,000 Tunku Gold Cup over 1200m at Sungei Besi here today.

Partnered by regular jockey Benny Woodworth, the five-year-old defeated the bang-in-form mare HOT BUTTERFLY by 1 1/2 lengths in a time of 1:8.34, slicing 8.99 seconds off the previous record set by SANJUAN in the same race last year.

HOT BUTTERFLY came into the race fresh from her win in the Magic Millions Classic last December.

CAPTAIN OBVIOUS (Verglas - Shathor by Tirol) also won the Magic Millions Classic in 2009. Last year, the Chong Keng Leong-trained gelding won three consecutive features races, the Sports Toto Trophy, the Astro Wah Lai Toi Sprint Trophy (by 11 lengths) and the Astro Wah Lai Toi Vase.

CAPTAIN OBVIOUS finished down the field in the Coronation Cup last November when he returned with respiratory distress. He has obviously benefited from the short let-up since then with his tenth win in 15 starts today. The win also brought his earning to pass the RM2mil mark.

Trainer Chong has a great afternoon saddling three winners. Earlier, he sent out I WISH (Fantastic Light - Defarge by Batathea) and VIBRANT SPIRIT (Citidancer - Star party by Star Pak) to victory.

I WISH, however, had to share honours with KIWI MAESTRO (Generous - Morning Rise by Straight Strike) when they deadheated in a Class 5 - 1600m handicap.
