Champions off to a winning start

Azhar Ismail, who snatched the champion 2010 jockey's title with a double strike in his final two rides of the season, has started his defence of the title with a winner on the first day of the new season.

Prepared by last year's champion trainer Kevin Coetzee, SPEED EAGLE (Canny Lad - October Miss by Octagonal) romped to a 1 3/4-length victory in the Class 3 - 1100m sprint over the straight course here today.

It was the third win in four starts for the four-year-old who cost A$40,000 as a yearling.
