Jackson Low and Richard
Lines capped a championship season when they combined to capture the
RM750,000 Yang Di Pertua Negeri Gold Cup (2200) with TEARS TO DIAMONDS on
the final day of the 2011 racing season here today.
Jackson Low, already
assured of the jockey's title before the Malaysia Group 1 handicap, rode a
confident race on the Australian four-year-old, tucking him behind the
runaway pacemaker GOOD FEEL early.
TEARS TO DIAMONDS (Royal
Academy - Tears Of Argentina by Umatilla) was travelling so well that Low
had him second making the turn into the back straight and hit the front at
the top of the home stretch.
Although LIM'S FIGHTER was
opening up with giant strides in the concluding stages, TEARS TO DIAMONDS
won comfortably by one and three-quarter lengths to make it five wins in
succession, proving that his victory in the Charity Cup (2000m) in Ipoh last
month was on fluke. It was also the gelding's sixth win in nine outings.
The success by TEARS TO
DIAMONDS also sealed a first trainer's championship for Lines who tied with
Kevin Coetzee at 70 winners apiece but Lines won the title after amassing
more second placings.
Low won the jockey's title
with a comfortable five-winner lead (65-60) over last season's champion
Azhar Ismail.
