SOUTH EASTER showed that he
could be a force to be reckoned with in the Singapore Gold Cup (2200m) in
three months' time when he scored a narrow but well deserved win in the
S$150,000 Causeway Classic Stakes over 1800m at Kranji here today.
Ridden by Saimee Jumaat,
the Irish gelding showed superb fighting quality to rally in the closing
stages after being headed in the straight, then held off the late challenge
by SAMURAI PHOENIX to win by a head. PARFUMIER was another head further
back.
SOUTH EASTER (Galileo -
Dance Treat by Nureyev) had splendid staying pedigree, being by a dual Epsom
and Irish Derby winner who also captured the King George and Queen Elizabeth
Stakes.
His dam was successful
twice at 2000m in France. SOUTH EASTER, a 210,000 guineas yearling, won
twice at 2100m and 2000m in England, including the listed Magnolia Stakes at
Kempton, and was placed thrice in eight starts in England and Ireland before
coming to Singapore.
At Kranji, SOUTH EASTER has
now chalked up two wins and two placigs in 10 starts.
