Ghozi storms home to take Kranji Sprint

GHOZI, reverting to sprint this season after some good performances over a bit of distance last year, got his due reward when he stormed home to win the Group 3 Kranji Sprint over 1200m at Kranji here today.

Ridden by Saifudin Ismail, the two-time winner in Australia was well back in the early running and then came up against a wall of horses at the top of the straight.

But when an opening came halfway down the straight, GHOZI (Catbird - Finito Fling by Luskin Star) passed the front runners in a few strides and then held off the fast-finishing CLAIR FASTPASS (Fastnet Rock - Hanover by Marscay) to win by one and a quarter lengths.

It was the sort of run that took him to victory in the Group 2 Stewart Cup (1400m) last May which was followed by four consecutive placings in group races, including third placings in the Patrons' Bowl (1600m) and Kranji Mile (1600m).

For Saifudin, the decision to be based in Singapore not so long ago is now bearing fruit. A double today bring his tally for the season to 11. It was also his second group win on the season after winning on FATKID (Handsome Ransom - Grace Jones by Maroof) in the Fortune Bowl in February.
