Jockey Goon suspended six months

IPOH:  April 24, 2011

Jockey Calvin Goon was today handed a six-month suspension for his handling of LEAN ON ME (Honours List - Boba by Woodman) in a Class 4 - 1600m handicap here yesterday.

The Leong Poh Keong-trained gelding came from 12th of 14 runners at the home turn to finish fifth to KIRI KANAN.

The Stewards concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of LEAN ON ME today. Evidence was taken from Goon and Leong, the rider and trainer of LEAN ON ME respectively. Evidence was also taken from Goon’s witnesses, namely, jockeys Benny Woodworth, Jackson Low and TM Wan.

Goon was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(10) for failing to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards. The particulars of the charge were that:

1. Between the 1200m and the 1000m, he failed to position his mount to race behind KIWI MAESTRO when there was an opportunity to do so which would enable him to comply with his riding instructions; and

2. From entering the home straight to the 50m mark, he failed to ride his mount with sufficient vigour and determination to the satisfaction of the Stewards.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into consideration the facts of this case, Goon’s points of mitigation and his clean record. Goon was suspended from riding in races for a period of six months with effect from April 25 and to expire on October 24, both days inclusive. He was advised of his right of appeal.
