Just two months after
taking charge of GITANO HERNANDO after the five-year-old had finished sixth
in the Dubai World Cup for the second successive year, the English entire
gave trainer Herman Brown his second Group 1 S$3mil Singapore International
Airlines Cup at Kranji tonight, after JAY PEG's success in 2008.
Lukewarm in the betting
after his unplaced effort in the Audemars Piguet QEII Cup (2000m) at Sha Tin
on May 1, GITANO HERNANDO (Hernando - Gino's Spirits by Perugino) was always
well up with the pace and hit the front close to home after a thrilling
tussle with WAIKATO in the home stretch.
Laurie Laxon's seasoned
campaigner, who finished fourth last year, looked like a possibility for
most of the home straight before he faded in the closing stage to deadheat
for third with Hong Kong's IRIAN.
RIVER JETEZ, from the
stable of another South African trainer Mike De Kock, finished best of the
rest to take second placing.
"On
a track like Kranji which is a bit sharp for him, we decided to go for a
change of tactics as we didn’t have a chance if we came from behind," Brown
said.
“I also told Glyn to
ride him more positive at the start. Just keep him going, try and get some
pace and settle him as early as possible. Glyn couldn’t have ridden him
better."
