Two new jockeys will join the Kranji riding ranks after Brazilian Ivaldo Santana de Oliveira and South African Gregory Cheyne were granted club’s licensed jockey’s licences by the Singapore Turf Club. Santana is licensed from Jan 15 to Jun 30 while Cheyne is licensed from Feb 1 July 31. Santana, 30, has notched close to 800 wins in his eleven years of riding in Brazil where he is currently licensed by the Jockey Club of Sao Paulo. The Brazilian jockey, who has won 48 group and listed races, including 12 at Group 1 level, goes to scale at 50.5kg. Cheyne, 35, is an experienced South African jockey with more than 1,100 winners to his name, including the 2009 Vodacom Durban July with BIG CITY LIFE (Casey Tibbs - Dollar Crisis by Goldmark) which was his biggest success among his 61 Black Type wins. Shortly after his Durban July win, Cheyne moved to Hong Kong where he rode for three seasons. The highlight of his stay in the former British colony is the win aboard SWEET SANETTE (Jallad - Scented Samantha by National Assembly) in the Group 3 Bauhinia Sprint Trophy in 2010. Cheyne has also represented South Africa at a jockeys’ series in Seoul, South Korea in 2008. He goes to scale at 51.5kg. |
