No denying outsider Keep Away

Despite having won two of five starts this season, KEEP AWAY (Air Jihad - Laurel Alice by Biwa Hayahide) started as the rank outsider in the Open Handicap over 1400m at Kranji here today.

It was probably because the Japanese gelding had achieved all his previous successes over 1600m and beyond.

But the Hideyuki Takaoka-trained gelding could not be kept at bay by his five rivals, coasting to a three-and-three-quarter lengths victory with Oliver Placais in the saddle to pay $78 for a win. It was his 11th win in 41 starts.

"I thought the 1400m journey may be too short,” said Takaoka. “But there were only six runners in the field.  I told the jockey to follow the pace and there was good pace which helped.

"The jockey rode him well. He was steady through the race and gave him plenty of room as well."
