First-season trainer Steven
Lam, who has granted his licence last April, finally saddled his first
career winner when LUCKY EMPRESS (Thunder Gulch - Extra Heat by Citidancer)
saluted the judges in the Class 5, Div 2 - 1600m handicap on the polytrack
at Kranji here today.
Despite her name,
eight-year-old LUCKY EMPRESS (formerly Imperial Memory) took 27 outings to
record her first win in Singapore after having started 16 times in New
Zealand for two wins.
LUCKY EMPRESS, ridden by
Oscar Chavez, settled second behind the pacemaker SILENT FAITH and easily
past him with ease in the home stretch to win by two and a half lengths.
Lam, a Hong Kong-born
Singapore permanent resident, is a product of the
Singapore Training Academy for Racing (STAR) programme and most of his
horses have been picked up from other trainers.
"Lucky
Empress had been one of my better horses from Day 1. She is honest and was a
little unlucky with Joao Moreira two starts back", Lam said. "With the good
draw today, a nice weight and not much to beat, I thought this would be now
or never."
