Apprentice Liew Seng Cheong was today handed a six-month suspension for his handling of KIWI MAESTRO (Generous - Morning Rise by Straight Strike) in a Class 5 - 1400m sprint here last Sunday. KIWI MAESTRO, trained by Abdul Rahim, came from a long way back to finish fifth to EASTERN HERO. At the Perak Turf Club here today, the Stewards concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of KIWI MAESTRO. Evidence was taken from Liew, the rider of KIWI MAESTRO, Abdul Rahim Dr Pratul Vasantrao Patil, the Veterinary Surgeon of the Perak Turf Club. Liew pleaded guilty to a charge under MRA Rule 44(10) for failing to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards. The particulars of the charge were that whilst riding KIWI MAESTRO in the above race: 1. At approximately the 1000m to the 600m mark, he failed to attempt to ride his mount in a midfield position behind TULSA which would have complied with his riding instructions; 2. From passing the 600m till approximately the 300m mark, he made insufficient effort to improve his mount when there were opportunities to do so. When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into consideration the facts of this case, Liew’s points of mitigation and his record. Liew was suspended from riding in races for a period of six months with immediate effect today and to expire on July 6, both days inclusive. He was also fined RM20,000 and was advised of his right of appeal. |
