SINGAPORE:  Jan 27, 2011

John Meagher, one of the biggest names to come out of Australasia to train at Kranji, will be relinquishing his MRA trainer’s licence with effect from Feb 20 to return to Australia.

Meagher, who won the Melbourne Cup with WHAT A NUISANCE (St Puckle - Fashion Bell by Belmura) in 1985, has had 11 successful years in Singapore, winning more than 550 races during his time here. He finished 2010 joint fifth in the table with 49 winners.

The 62-year-old Aussie has consistently finished in the top five on the Singapore trainer’s premiership and racked up 29 Group wins including seven Group 1 races.

Meagher’s biggest win here was the 2000 Singapore Gold Cup with KIM ANGEL (Serheed - Chancery Star by Chanteclair).

He also won three Raffles Cups with MAYO’S MUSIC (Procol Harum - Mayo Million by Royal Troubador) in 2004, LIM’S CLASSIC (Dehere - Augustine by Black Zephyr) in 2006 and LIM’S OBJECTIVE (O’Reilly - Hasty Bird by Bluebird) in 2007.

His other Group 1 wins all came in 2006 when successful with ARENTI (O’Reilly - Gio by Centaine) in the Lion City Cup, RECAST (Thunder Gulch - Abonnement by Marauding) in the Kranji Mile and TAURUS (Dieu D’or - Chutima by El Vaquero) in the Patrons’ Bowl.
