Trainer John Meagher ended
his 11-year stint in Singapore in the same manner as he had started it in
1999 when his very first runner QUORUM (Zieten - Committee Decision by
Lypheor) was successful.
Having taken the decision
to move back to Australia to train jointly with his three sons, Meagher
entered just two runners in his final meeting at Kranji tonight.
His first runner MONKEY MAN
found one to beat in the Benchmark 83 - 1200m sprint but VILLAGE ensured a
fairy tale ending to his Singapore adventure when he triumphed in the Class
4, Div 1 - 1200m sprint on the polytrack.
VILLAGE (Flying Spur -
Ardara by Sadler's Wells), ridden by Robbie Fradd, came from a long way back
to snatch victory by half a length.
"It’s
an end of era and the best possible way to finish it," said son Chris. The
senior Meagher was away in Melbourne on business and was not on hand to
celebrate the victory.
