Moreira grabs headline with double

Leading jockey Joao Moreira continued his good form of late to win both the two newspaper-sponsored races run at Kranji this evening.

Moreira, who set a riding record of 116 winners last season, had to work doubly hard on JUST DASHING (Western Verse - Berkeley Springs Saratoga Springs) by to win The New paper Trophy (Class 4 - 1600m).

Despite struggling to find winning form again since his only previous success in September last year, the Cliff Brown-trained four-year-old was installed favourite and won by a neck.

Moreira, who scored twice on SHAOLIN SOLDIER (Exceed And Excel - Dynamic Love by Brave Warrior) last year, had a winning reunion with the five-year-old in the Shin Min Cup (Class 3 - 1200m).

The Australian gelding came from well off the pace to beat the front-running by half a length for his fourth win in 24 starts.

"It’s always nice to ride winners, and to make it in the two main races of the night is extra special," said Moreira who brought his tally for the season to 66 wins with the double.
