Apprentice Nawawi suspended one month

IPOH:  Feb 27, 2011

Apprentice Muhammad Nawawi Ahmad (A Nawawi) has been suspended one month for his handling of SHOWMETHEWAY (Falvelon - Glitzy Guru by Johann Quatz) in a Class 4 - 1100m sprint over the straight course here yesterday.

The five-year-old gelding, trained by Mohd Sukri, came from a long way back to finish sixth to SUSPECT.

Nawawi was fined RM250 for negligence under MRA Rule 152(5)(a) for failing to present himself within the stipulated time for an inquiry into the start of SHOWMETHEWAY.

At the Perak Turf Club today, the Stewards concluded an inquiry into the start of SHOWMETHEWAY. Evidence was taken from Nawawi in the presence of his master, trainer Tony Yeoh, and Sukri, the trainer of SHOWMETHEWAY.

Nawawi pleaded guilty to a charge under MRA Rule 44(9)(b)(iii) for incompetent riding. The particulars of the charge were that whilst riding SHOWMETHEWAY in the above race, as the gates opened, he failed to give sufficient rein to his mount, therefore resulting in his mount throwing its head up, losing considerable ground as a consequence.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into consideration the facts of this case, Nawawi’s points of mitigation and his record. Nawawi was suspended from riding in races for a period of one month with effect from tomorrow and to March 27, both days inclusive. He was advised of his right of appeal.
